The future looks bright

The Joint Institute for Biological Sciences(JIBS)  building will serve as the central hub for the BioEnergy Science Center (BESC). It is uniquely equipped to provide state-of-the-art bioenergy research today and well into the future.

The JIBS building will support BECS research staff, visiting staff and faculty members and critical imaging, analytical technologies and biology research laboratories. It also has extraordinary capabilities for groundbreaking genomics, proteomics and metabolomics research. Combined with the truly outstanding computing capabilities available at ORNL, the JIBS facility ensures BESC researchers have the innovative tools needed to develop viable biofuel solutions for the 21st Century.

Future developments to the JIBS building include:

  • A 3,000-ft2 expansion of modern greenhouse space, to be completed by 2009
  • A new science and technology (S&T) park, providing 200,000 ft2 of laboratory and office space for ORNL’s commercial partners, is being constructed one block from JIBS
  • The Complex Carbohydrate Research Center recently accepted delivery of a Varian Unity Inova 900-MHz spectrometer, making it one of the first institutions worldwide to receive this state-of-the-art spectrometer
